Why Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy mainly used with children where play becomes the child’s way of communicating thoughts and feelings. π§Έπ¨ Instead of relying only on talking (which can be difficult for young children), the therapist uses toys, games, drawing, and storytelling to help the child express emotions, process experiences, and work through problems.
During play therapy sessions, a trained therapist observes how the child plays and may gently guide activities to help the child explore feelings, develop coping skills, and improve behaviour or relationships. It is often used to support children dealing with issues such as anxiety, trauma, family changes, or social difficulties.
In short: Play Therapy uses play as a natural language for children to express and understand their emotions in a safe and supportive environment. π±
Who it benefits.
-
Young children (typically ages 3–12) – because play is their natural way of communicating and understanding the world.
-
Children experiencing emotional difficulties – such as anxiety, sadness, anger, or low self-esteem.
-
Children who have experienced trauma – including abuse, neglect, grief, or major life changes like divorce or moving.
-
Children with behavioural challenges – such as aggression, difficulty following rules, or problems at school.
-
Children with developmental or social difficulties – including those who struggle with communication, relationships, or emotional regulation.
-
Families – sometimes parents or caregivers are involved in sessions to improve relationships and support the child’s development.
Overall, play therapy helps children express emotions safely, develop coping skills, improve behaviour, and build healthier relationships. π±
